VA disability rating guides
Find the diagnostic code, percentage levels, medical findings, and functional details VA considers. Each guide translates the rating criteria without trying to predict your decision.
Most searched
Start with four conditions Veterans frequently research. Each full guide explains the current rating framework, evidence focus, and common C&P examination questions.
Mental health
Post-traumatic stress disorder can affect mood, judgment, relationships, reliability, and the ability to function at work and in daily life.
Hearing
Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, or another sound without an outside source. The history and recurrence of the symptom are central.
Respiratory
Sleep apnea involves repeated breathing interruptions during sleep. The type of apnea, documented symptoms, treatment, and respiratory complications can affect evaluation.
Hearing
VA hearing-loss ratings are produced from controlled test results rather than a general description that hearing is difficult.

How to read a rating guide
A rating guide should show what the rule measures. It should not reduce every condition to a generic symptom checklist.
Explore the diagnostic code directoryJoint motion, hearing tests, pulmonary function, blood pressure, and other objective measurements may control specific ratings.
Some criteria turn on how often episodes occur, how long they last, or whether the impairment is persistent.
VA may consider what the condition prevents during work, ordinary activity, repeated use, or flare-ups.
Medication, prescribed equipment, surgery, hospitalization, or ongoing therapy matters when the applicable criteria mention it.
Different diagnoses do not always receive separate ratings when they compensate the same manifestation or impairment.
Severity can change. VA may assign staged ratings when the evidence supports different percentages during different periods.
Individual rating ≠ combined rating
Your condition pages explain individual evaluations. When VA grants more than one condition, it applies each additional percentage to the remaining efficiency and rounds only the final combined value.
